Fire Damage – Two Simple and Effective Professional Treatments
The aftermath of fire damage to your home is horrible. Not only were your things damaged by the fire, they were also damaged by fighting the fire. Now that the danger has passed, you are left with stains and odors. The last thing you want is more invasive chemicals! Two of the most effective cleanup tools rely on new technology but simple chemistry to restore your home:
Smoke Odor Removal and Ozone Treatment
It is critical not just to mask the smell of smoke but to actually remove the odor from the cause. Ozone treatment is a phenomenally powerful oxidizer that can treat “smoke smell” without leaving residue or lingering odors. Ozone occurs in nature, most often as a result of lightning strikes that occur during thunderstorms; it’s that “fresh, clean, spring-like rain” smell that we notice after a storm.
Ozone removes odors by chemically changing the structure of the molecules that are creating the smell. The extra oxygen atom attaches itself to the other molecules to create a new molecule that is odorless and non-offensive. The process is called oxidation. As a gas, ozone can clean anywhere air is allowed to flow; that’s why it so effective in removing lingering odors.
In a post-fire situation, the ozone generator is left outside of the room and a short connecting hose allows the ozone to flow into the room. Although ozone is very powerful, it is very unstable and begins to decompose instantly; the half-life ranges from a few seconds to several hours. Ozone decomposes completely into oxygen so no harmful by-products remain.
Soot Residue and Soda Blasting
Soda blasting is a safe, eco-friendly and effective way to remove soot and carbon residues from walls and surfaces. The process uses bicarbonate of soda, a blast generator, and high pressure compressed air for a non-destructive, environmentally friendly, chemical free, clean result. It is gentle enough to remove the coating without harming the substrate.
This specially formulated bicarbonate of soda contains flow aids and moisture inhibitors not present in ordinary soda. The abrasion fractures into smaller particles on impact, releases energy and removes contaminants with no damage to underlying materials. Unlike sand, shot or grit used as an abrasive, soda is completely safe with no impact on the environment before, during, and after use.
